Skill-building workshops
Participants will choose and attend 3 of the 4 workshops offered, led by industry experts from HLM. Each worksop is 1.5 hours.
Plain language for written communication
Written communication that is long, convoluted, and full of jargon is hard to understand and use, which means it can prevent people from getting the care they need. We will teach you how to write in ways that most people can understand and use. You will learn how to use language that is clear and concise, so your health education materials are more likely to help people. Facilitators will touch on emerging technologies in health writing, including generative AI such as Chat GPT.

Offered during Workshop Session 1 only
Strategies to incorporate accessibility into written and digital health materials
Everyone is affected by limited abilities at some point in their lifetime. In our new lens of disabilities as universal, temporary, and permanent, this panel introduces strategies that health professionals and community organizations can take to make written and digital health materials accessible to those with various visual, audio, and cognitive impairments.
Offered during Workshop Sessions 1 and 3
Health literacy:
Design at your desk
People are less likely to connect with your health information if it does not look good. A little bit of design can go a long way in engaging your patients and communities. The good news is that content creators do not need an expensive graphic design program. Learn how to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Canva to create engaging, health-literate materials. Facilitators will touch on emerging technologies in material and resource design, specifically considerations for using generative AI images in health communications.
Offered during Workshop Sessions 2 and 3
Building a health literate organization
Building directly upon the recent National Academy of Medicine’s Attributes of a Health Literate Organization discussion paper, this workshop will introduce you to a broad range of health literacy strategies and interventions that currently exist, research related to those health literacy interventions, and best practices to apply them in your organization.
Offered during Workshop Session 2 only
